Sister City Sketch #3, Jan 9, 2021

The theme for our third Sister City Sketch was “Construction”. There were some great interpretations, and some free-spirit urban sketching too. That’s always fine, the themes are just there if you want to join in.

For this coming week, the theme is “Look Up”. Remember to keep it an urban sketch – not just cloud-watching!

You can see the great construction theme sketches from our Calgary Sister City Sketchers here.

Our sketch of the week is by Luise Mendler-Johnson who sketched a beautiful interpretation of the theme with her construction of a reading list of books from the library:

Sketch In & Around, Jan 2, 2021

Happy New Year! The theme this week was “New”. We are now using our Urban Sketchers Edmonton logo for our blog banner as part of our new look. Hoping for a fresh new year that can include sketching together in person at some point. For now, we are continuing our weekly Sketch In & Arounds, and our Sister City Sketches. I have decided to stop numbering our Sketch In & Arounds since they have become a part of our regular sketching activities. I will just date them from here on in.

Our next Sister City Sketch with Calgary Urban Sketchers is this coming week, and the theme is “Construction”. Please join in if you can!

Here are our “New” theme sketches from this past week. The first one is our beautiful Sketch of the Week by Debbie Ha who sketched something that is exciting for any artist – her new paint brushes!

Our new Urban Sketchers Edmonton logo!

Happy New Year! And to ring in the new year, we have a new Urban Sketchers Edmonton logo. We tried to conform as much as possible to the international Urban Sketchers logo criteria, but using a free design program has its limitations. If any of our members has a more sophisticated program and design skills, please let us know on our Facebook page.

Thanks to Yvonne Rezek for her help and to Karen Wall for the sketch that we incorporated into the logo.

Since we became an official chapter of Urban Sketchers in 2020, It is also a good time to remind everyone that our sketches need to adhere to the Urban Sketchers manifesto:

  1. We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation.
  2. Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel.
  3. Our drawings are a record of time and place.
  4. We are truthful to the scenes we witness.
  5. We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.
  6. We support each other and draw together.
  7. We share our drawings online.
  8. We show the world, one drawing at a time.

Have a great year in sketching!

Sister City Sketch #2, Dec 12, 2020

We are continuing our Sister City Sketching with Calgary Urban Sketchers on the second Saturday of every month. The theme for this week was “Dashboard Drawing”.

This coming week’s theme is “holiday decorations”. Remember to make it an urban sketch: sketch on location and include the surroundings and background in your sketch to make it an urban sketch, whether inside or outside. Have fun with it!

Our 35th Sketch In & Around, Dec 5, 2020

Thirteen sketchers got in, out and around for the “Your Choice” theme this week!

This coming week is our second Sister City Sketch with Calgary Urban Sketchers. The theme is “Dashboard Drawing”. It just means drawing from inside your car or, for those who don’t have one, drawing from inside a public transit vehicle. The actual dashboard does not have to be included but can be and can add an interesting element. As you are out running errands before the Christmas slow down (safely, please!) why not take a few minutes while parked to draw the big box store, a city street, the view of the river valley, whatever, from the warmth of your parked car. Lots of scope for imagination and interpretation!

Here are the wonderful and varied “Your Choice” sketches:

Our 34th Sketch-In & Around, Nov 28, 2020

Our sketching theme this week was “Home” – a place where we’ll all be spending more time over the next few months. Coffee seems to be a sub-theme – hmmm.

It’s your choice of urban sketching subject for this coming week. Happy December!

Some cozy “Home” sketches here:

Here are your sketch themes/prompts for December!

Themes are always optional. Urban sketching is drawn on location, from life, not from memory or photos, using any materials that help tell a story.
